Today, the McGuinty government tabled our 2010 Budget. Our Open Ontario plan will create new opportunities for jobs and economic growth. It protects the progress Ontarians have made in our schools and hospitals as we eliminate the deficit caused by the global recession.
We will manage the province’s resources effectively while staying true to our Liberal values. We will not put economic growth at risk by cutting too much, too soon threatening job creation and growth, nor will we proceed with spending as if there is no deficit.
We are moving Open Ontario forward with investments in postsecondary education and support for northern Ontario. We are introducing full-day learning in our schools starting this September and helping laid-off workers get retrained. We’re continuing to invest heavily in infrastructure to create jobs and stimulate the economy.
After three balanced budgets, the global recession caused Ontario, like other jurisdictions in Canada and around the world, to go into deficit. Eliminating the deficit is important if we’re going to open Ontario to new jobs and growth. We have a plan to return the budget to balance in a prudent and responsible way over the next 8 years.
I am proud of what we’ve been able to do in these challenging times to stay true to our commitments while finding creative and innovative ways to stimulate the economy. Complete information is available at http://www.fin.gov.on.ca/en/budget/ontariobudgets/2010/ .
As always, I look forward to hearing from you over the days to come.
