I wanted you to know about two initiatives that are of real interest to Don Valley West residents. First of all, you will have heard about our $9 billion transit investment announced this past Wednesday. As part of that investment, there is a significant Eglinton Avenue development including a new rapid transit line on Eglinton Avenue from Kennedy Station to Pearson Airport. Commuters will be able to connect to other transit service including, TTC Eglinton West, Eglinton and Kennedy subway stations and GO Transit. The TTC estimates construction could begin in 2010, with service planned for 2016.
Secondly, Minister of Labour, Peter Fonseca announced this past Thursday that we will be introducing legislation to protect some of our most vulnerable workers – domestic caregivers, many of whom come from the Philippines to care for children. You have heard about a series of abuses in recent days. We will be moving to clean up the rules that govern the agencies that connect these women - and they are largely women - with jobs. Minister Fonseca will also introduce a 1-800 hotline for caregivers to call if they are experiencing difficulties.
