Hi Everyone,The fall session is coming to an end at Queen’s Park and I wanted to share a few pieces of information with you.
Fall Road Safety Bill
A large number of constituents contacted me about Bill 126, with concerns about the provisions that would have restricted the number of passengers for G2 drivers who are 19 and under. Minister Bradley has heard the concerns from the public and from other MPPs. As a result, that provision has been withdrawn from the legislation on the basis that the concerns outweigh the benefits. The legislation retains other road safety provisions. Please Visit http://www.ontla.on.ca/web/bills/bills_detail.do?locale=en&BillID=2118&detailPage=bills_detail_about
for a description of the proposed legislation.
You will have read about the labour negotiations between school boards and teachers. As it stands now, we have been able to facilitate provincial framework agreements with all of the education employee groups and school boards except one.The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and the Ontario Public School Boards' Association (OPSBA) have not come to a resolution – as hard as we tried to facilitate an agreement. Unfortunately, that means that the $800 million that was available over the next four years is no longer available. We extended the deadline once – it has now passed and public boards and elementary teacher locals now must begin the bargaining process – with access to a 2% increase each year for the next two years.Poverty Reduction StrategyI’m very proud that this past week Minister Deb Matthews released our Poverty Reduction Strategy. It is a comprehensive document entitled “Breaking the Cycle” that outlines targets, indicators and investments to which we have committed. You can see the whole strategy at www.ontario.ca/breakingthecycle.
It is entirely appropriate that in the current economic downturn our government would follow through on its commitment to the neediest members of our society. Those of you who live in Don Valley West should have received my newsletter with your mail. Please note the change of address for my constituency office.
